Can I be in Band?
I don't play an instrument!
Membership in band is open to all interested high school students regardless
of experience. We frequently have students joining band in highschool with
NO experience. If they're interested in working with us to "catch up", then
we're interested in working with them. We have a number of options, and
there is a place for them in the program.
Students who do not play band instruments and do not wish to learn, can and
DO participate fully in the marching band. Typically, they carry an
instrument and from the audience, appear to be a playing member.
Students who are not instrumentalists can also participate in the colorguard
component of the marching band and the highly competitive Winterguard
program. We always have a number of students participate in the program
this way and they are considered a full member of the band "family".
I only play a concert instrument.
Students who play the oboe or bassoon do not play these instruments on the
field, but participate in the colorguard, carry a different instrument on
the field, or, after passing an audition, participate with the drumline.
However, these students DO play their regular instrument in class and have
supervised instruction on music other than the marching show music.
Membership in the drumline is based on an audition in May or early summer.
I'm involved in other activities, can I still join?
We have band members involved in all facets of J.J. Pearce High School. They are involved in
football, basketball, baseball, track, swimming, soccer, cross county, volleyball,
cheerleading, Pacesetters, and tennis. They are also involved in Academic
Decathlon, Musicals, Drama Productions, Technical Theater, Robotics, French
Club, Latin Club, and German Club. Band members also stay active in academics with
several members in student council. Most band students are in National Honor Society and are
National Society Officers, and many are selected as Dalrich Exchange Club students of the
month. In 2002, four of the top ten graduating students were in band, including the salutatorian.
Does it cost money to be in band?
Students are required to provide money to cover expenses not covered by the school.
These expenses are broken into three categories:
registration, operations, and trip expenses.
See the section on Assessments under Parent/Student
Info for more information on
these fees.
Scholarships are readily available and can be used towards spring trip fees
and/or toward fees for individual lessons. It is important that both both parent
and student have demonstrated a willingness to help with fundraisers in order
to be considered for these scholarships.
Contact the board's financial aid representative, Patti Whitehurst, for more information.
I have more questions, who can I ask?
Any of the band directors are available to answer questions. Select the Contact Info page on this website for their names and phone numbers.
You can also check out the FAQs for answers to many questions new band members and parents have.
